Br35eaking Ba56ad
Five seasons without a wasted scene, and the best-shot show on the whole list. Sixty-two episodes, one chemistry teacher, and an ending that keeps every promise it made.
I did it for me. I liked it. I was good at it.
Walter White, “Felina”
Five seasons without a wasted scene, and the best-shot show on this whole list. Vince Gilligan pitched it in one line (Mr Chips to Scarface) and then spent sixty-two episodes refusing to let the change happen in a jump. Every step is small and defensible at the time, and only obviously monstrous when you look back ten episodes.
What makes it hold up is the discipline. It knew how long it was, it ended on purpose, and it fired every gun it introduced. And it had the nerve to make him say the real reason out loud at the end, after five seasons of insisting it was all for his family, which almost no show of its kind is willing to do.
Erlenmeyer · superlab · batch marked blue
The number is the character. Walt cannot let a competitor sit two points above him, and the show lets that one detail explain every decision he makes for five seasons.
The blue is a chemical impossibility and the writers knew it. They wanted a signature you could see from across a room, so that when it turns up in another city, the audience understands what that means before anyone says it.
