The Mascots Five schools, four animals

Nearly every school I have gone to picked an animal, and I have been each of them in turn: a hawk, then a roadrunner, then a mustang, and now an anteater. The first school of the five, before any of that, never gave me one.

  1. 01 · First school

    None

    Minaret Academy 2011 – 2015grades K to 3

Kindergarten through 3rd grade at the Islamic school in Anaheim, and the one gap in the row: no mascot on record anywhere I can find, and none I ever knew.

  2. 02 · Elementary

    Hawks

    Cielo Vista Elementary 2015 – 2018grades 4 to 6

The marquee out front put it plainly: “It’s a great day to be a HAWK!” There is a photo of me standing under that sign in September 2016, backpack on.

  3. 03 · Middle

    Roadrunners

    RSM Intermediate 2018 – 2020grades 7 and 8

“Home of the Roadrunners” is printed on the student ID card itself, on the line directly under my name.

  4. 04 · High school

    Mustangs

Trabuco Hills High School 2020 – 2024Mission Viejo, CA

Four years of it, and in the last weeks of senior year the school sign read “Congratulations THHS Mustangs” on the way in.

  5. 05 · College

    Anteaters

University of California, Irvine 2024 – 2028Irvine, CA

The current one, and the only one of the five with its own hand signal and its own war cry. Zot zot zot.

What I Learned year by year

The camps, the classes and the languages I taught myself, one school year at a time: where I was, what I picked up, and every language I could write by the end of it.
