Pirates of the Caribbean
A theme-park ride that became five films, one of the great performances, and the best sea-adventure score of the century. The ships, the curses, and the nine Pirate Lords.
Now, bring me that horizon.Captain Jack Sparrow · The Curse of the Black Pearl
Black sails, and the only ship in the Caribbean fast enough to catch the Flying Dutchman. She was built as the Wicked Wench for the East India Trading Company until Cutler Beckett had her burned and sunk for refusing to carry slaves, and Jack traded thirteen years of captaincy to Davy Jones to raise her off the seabed.
What the films actually understand is that a ship is not transport. It is freedom, and every single character in five films wants one, or wants one back, or has traded something terrible for one.
