A kyber crystal, a focusing array and a power cell, in a hilt every Jedi builds by hand as the last step of their training. No two are alike, because the crystal picks its Jedi and the Jedi builds the rest of it around what the crystal wants.
It is a terrible weapon in almost every practical sense: no range, no ammunition, and it will take your own arm off. It exists because the people carrying it were supposed to be the kind who would rather not need it at all.
